The National Action Network (Dr Willcox, Associate Professor Cleland, Associate Professor Hart and Dr Thomson) had an initial meeting in April 1999. Professor Browner of the BJD Steering Committee was invited. The meeting took place in connection to the SICOT 99 SYDNEY, where there was great media support and interest for the Decade. The Bone and Joint Decade was launched in Australia in April 2001 with a Scientific Meeting at which over 250 professionals and patients were present followed by a dinner with nearly 150. The Australian Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Dr Michael Wooldridge, launched the Decade pledging Australian Government support for its activities. Health professionals joined patients during the Scientific Meeting to talk about the scientific and personal issues involved in musculoskeletal disease. Sir Gustav Nossal gave the after dinner speech and stressed the enormous opportunities there were for patients with rheumatic diseases to participate in their own management and also outlined the great advances that would occur in rheumatology/orthopaedics as a consequence of biotechnology and the human genome project. Australia endorsed the BJD in April 2001. The Steering Committee will be meeting over the next few months to develop further plans for the Decade. A Partnership's Gala Dinner will be held on 13th October 2001 at the Regent Ballroom, Sydney. Professor Lars Lidgren, Chairman of the International Steering Committee of the BJD will be the guest of honour. The 4 peak organisations formed the initial Executive.
